Andorra: the hidden gem in the Pyrenees

Why you should choose Andorra for your next ski holiday.

You may not need to keep as close an eye on the snowfall if you head to Andorra. With an impressive 65 peaks sitting above 2000 meters, many of Grandvalira resorts are snow-sure destinations. In addition to the recent investment Andorra has made has resulted in there being plenty of snow cannons strategically placed across the resorts if the snowfall needs a helping hand.


Andorra’s Grandvalira consists of six different areas, each with their own individuality. If you are looking to party until dawn, then Pas de la Casa is the place for you. Looking for a cosy romantic vibe, then Grau Roig or Canillo are the perfect getaways. However, with something for the whole family Soldeu, El Tarter and Encamp boast the widest variety of activities, restaurants and shops.

Andorra may face challenges if you compare it to the quaint, charming French chalets or those villages dripping in Austrian charm. However, with a large majority of its accommodations located either next to or on the slopes, you don’t have plan your journey to the ski lifts in the morning. You’re already there.

Most people would, of course, prefer to ski with the sun streaming down on them and in Andorra this certainly more likely to happen. With on average 300 days of sun a year you are certainly likely to impress with your goggle tan! Ensure you soak up the sun when you are being whisked up the mountain on the comfortable soft seated chairlifts.


Many of Andorra’s resorts have thought of both adults and children. Canillo, El Tarter, Soldeu and Grau Roig all include local creches and daycare services allowing parents to enjoy a day out on the slopes without worrying about their little ones.

Ski Schools

Are you ready to take your first step on snow or are your kids in love with the sport? Then the Grandvalira Ski & Mountain Academy, with its dedicated ski schools both adults and children as well as a specialised school for FreeRiders and off-piste skiing, is the perfect place to enhance your skiing. They focus on enjoyable learning experience with comprehensive training from over 400 instructors, some with 50 years experience.

Top tip – head to Canillo if you’re a beginner. It boasts the most gentle green and blue runs to really boost your confidence.


For those of you who are extreme sport loves Andorra is the ideal place. Head to Pic Blanc Ridge for a heart-stopping moment, or check out the marked routes shown on your piste map. Many freeriding areas have been adapted for both intermediated and expert FreeRiders. A great way to discover an enjoy FreeRiding is to explore and rider over unspoilt knee-deep powder without the risk of obstacles.

Après ski

Find the best spot for you to relax and unwind after a long day on the slopes. If it’s an all-night party you are looking for, then Pas de la Casa is where you need to be. Do you prefer to relax with a glass of wine in a stylish luxury hotel, Soldeu is the area for you.  But for those who simply want to listen to a DJ set on a terrace overlooking the mountains, El Tarter is your perfect spot. There might even be a hammock. Whatever your après style is, Grandvalira has it all.
